Jane Eynon Moncrief

October 6, 1924 — January 7, 2018

Jane Eynon Moncrief, 93, of Alliance, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on January 7, 2018, after a long illness. Born on October 6, 1924, in Alliance to Kathleen Ellett Eynon and Charles Chester Eynon, she lived in Alliance her entire life. In the fall of 1945, she married Donald Benton Moncrief.
A graduate of Alliance High School and Denison University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, Jane also had strong ties to the University of Mount Union. She attended summer school classes there in order to facilitate her graduation from Denison in three years, and her daughters attended Mount Union, as did her husband, Don, who later served on the Board of Trustees until his death in 1969. In 1997 Jane was co-recipient of Mount Union's McKinley Fellow Award. Several years later she initiated and coordinated the beautification of the small island that was originally created by her grandfather, Walter Ellett, at the intersection of Vincent and Simpson very near to her childhood home and one of the entrances to the campus. The island was refurbished and now serves as a "memorial island" where many neighbors, former neighbors and friends have planted trees in memory of loved ones.
Jane was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she once helped facilitate a reading program for children and until a few years ago coordinated the arrangements for each week's altar flowers. She belonged to the Alliance Women's Club, The Alliance Country Club, Coterie, as well as several bridge clubs, garden clubs and sewing groups. She served as a "pink lady" at Alliance Community Hospital, volunteering her time once a week for many years. Jane owned and operated, with several good friends, The Sewing Circle on Union Avenue in Alliance and then went on to another venture, the in-home sale of clothing, for several years.
Although widowed at a young age, Jane provided a loving and lively home for her children, grandchildren and some of her great-grandchildren, who very much loved their visits there. The summer visits, very often scheduled around Carnation Week, were especially enjoyable, and many wonderful memories were created over the years.
Jane is survived by her three daughters, Kathleen (Richard) Elias of Oakton, Virginia; Martha (Brian) Stafford of Vienna, Virginia; Rebecca (Mark) Skipper of Plantation, Florida; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Susan Eynon, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her grandparents, Jennie and Walter Ellett; her parents, Kathleen and Chet Eynon; her brother, Charles Eynon; her aunt and uncle, Eleanor and Bill Thompson, and their daughter, Kathy. The family would like to express their appreciation to Alliance Hospice as well as to Paula Moore and the Moore Care staff, a wonderful group of caring and dedicated women who were Jane's caregivers for the past four years.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, with friends gathering beginning at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Christ United Methodist Church 470 E. Broadway Ave. Alliance, OH 44601 or to Alliance Hospice 2461 W. State St. Alliance, OH 44601.
