Jay H. Karlen, age 77 of Alliance, went home to be with his Lord at 12:32 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at McCrea Manor Nursing Center after many years of ill health.
Mr. Karlen was born April 26, 1928 in Maximo, Ohio to Oscar Karlen and Velma (Hoover) Karlen Slider.
Mr. Karlen graduated in 1946 from Alliance High School and was the former Co-Owner of Clem Lumber for more than 37 years.
He was a member of Science Hill United Church of Christ for sixty years. He was a Past-President, Secretary, and Zone Governor of Zone 6 of the Lexington Ruritan Club, and a former Lexington Twp. Trustee. Jay enjoyed playing golf, hunting and being with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly J. (Oyster) Karlen, whom he married June 25, 1950, and would have celebrated 55 years of marriage this June; son Charles Karlen of Las Vegas, Nevada, daughters Charlene (Ray) Boyce of Alliance and Cheryl (Chuck) Bryant of Tallmadge, son Gary (Bonnie) Karlen of Minerva; six grandchildren, Matthew and Katy Boyce, Kristi, Kassi, Kyle and Randi Karlen; sister, Doris (Robert) Ruth of Alliance; step-mother, Betty Karlen of Minerva; half-brothers and half-sisters, Cora L. (Randy) Evans of Alliance, Donald (Sally) Karlen and Dwight (Sondra) Karlen, both of Minerva, Jane (Gene) Stoffer of Alliance, Alice Moore and Anna Gambone of Canton, Jack Slider of Colorado and James Slider.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Wayne and Roy Karlen.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Science Hill United Church of Christ with Pastor Barry Stirbens officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Science Hill United Church of Christ Memorial Fund, 12316 Beeson St. NE, Alliance, Ohio.
