Jay C. Springer, age 81 of Alliance, died at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007 at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born May 25, 1926 in East Liverpool, Ohio to Clyde J. and Anna (Kell) Springer and moved to Alliance in 1958.
A graduate of East Liverpool High School, Mr. Springer attended Ohio University. He was formerly employed at J&L Steel in Louisville, was the former owner of D&J Drive In in East Liverpool, and worked as a Car Salesman for Lavery Chevrolet from 1972 to 1984.
Mr. Springer was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in East Liverpool and was a member of First Friends Church in Alliance.
He was a member of the Elks, American Legion, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, and former member of Sleepy Hollow Country Club and Rotary.
Mr. Springer was drafted for the Pittsburgh Pirates A Team, and in 2006, received special recognition in Hornell NY for his baseball abilities. He had played baseball during high school, and coached Lou Holtz in baseball as a young man. Later in life, Mr. Springer was recognized by Mr. Holtz at an East Liverpool High School reunion.
Mr. Springer participated as a Coach for Hot Stove for many years, and was a U. S. Navy WWII veteran.
Survivors include his children, Susan J. (Harold) Williams, Barbara A. Ellis, Debra L. (Gary) Harris, Michael J. Springer, and Sandy J. (David) Clunk, all of Alliance; grandchildren, Scott (Amy) Wachsman, Jayne (Scott) Williamson, David and Joanna Hoiles, Amy (Jeff) Faer, Robbie Harris, Jenni Jo Clunk and fianci�½ Larry Kinnard, Andrew and David Clunk, Mathew Springer, and Adam and Matt Williams; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Dakota, Olivia, Leah, Jazmya, Austin and Riley; one great-great-grandson due next month; longtime companion, Mary Lou Morley of Boardman, and his special companion, his dog Pepper.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nedra M. (Wardle) Springer, whom he married July 3, 1946; and who died June 16, 1991; and his siblings, Bill Springer, Ruth Fowler, Mary Alice Kelly, and Richard Springer.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Sams officiating. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
