Jean I. Ferguson

February 28, 1925 — July 11, 2022

Alliance

Jean I. Ferguson passed away on July 11, 2022 at her son’s home in Alliance.

She was born on February 28, 1925 in Minerva and graduated from Minerva High School where she was a member of the marching band and the National Honor Society.

As a divorced parent, she raised four sons Daniel (Jeanne) of Alliance, Denis “Duke” (Wendy) of Alliance, Douglas (Arcenia) of Vacaville, CA and David of Orlando, FL, who passed in 1999. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tiffany (Matthew) Morris of Efrat, Israel,  Danielle (Chris) Marazza of Alliance, Hillary (Jay) Ferguson King of Columbus, and Drew (Jackie) Ferguson of Celina, Texas along with nine great-grandchildren and her brother Joseph (Shirley) Grimes of Minerva.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth Grimes and Edna (Morehead) Grimes; her son, David Ferguson; sisters, Mildred and Bettie; and brothers, Richard, Gerald and Pete Grimes.

Jean worked for twenty-four years at Sandcap Abrasives (formerly Armour’s) and following retirement, became very involved in volunteering. She volunteered at Alliance Community Hospital, where she was on the auxiliary board, sewed many of the Christmas stockings that babies were sent home in during the holiday season, and was a member of Chapter AARP 3932 where she was once honored as Volunteer of the Year. Jean also volunteered for the Red Cross with the Blood Bank Program, The Board of Elections and worked on costume alterations for Fractured Follies.

Jean was of a strong religious faith and was a longtime member of the Vine Street United Methodist Church of Alliance (formerly the First Evangelical Church of Christ) where she was active on many of the church’s committees.

Her hobbies included sewing, walking, playing cards with her card club friends for many years, reading, and putting together puzzles. She loved to travel and made her way to New Zealand, Belize, New York, Dollywood and to her son’s homes in California and Florida, to name a few. She also enjoyed her membership events at the Alliance Senior Center. Jean loved her family and life (and chocolate!) and we know she has a place in Heaven.

A private family service will be held on Friday, July 15th.
