Jeraldine "Jeri" Burchfield, age 89, of Sebring, died at 12:05 am, Monday, June 1, 2009 at Crandall Medical Center. Formally of Alliance, Mrs. Burchfield was born Dec. 2, 1919 in Athens, OH to John and Esther (Saylor) Martin.
She attended Athens High School and was a member of the Daughters of America. Mother was generous and loving to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also made many contributions to various organizations, though her contributions may have been small, she had a very big heart and was touched by other peoples needs.
She was an avid reader starting with her youth and continued reading all through her later years. The National Geographic and Arizona Highways were among her favorites. She enjoyed poems, mysteries, watching documentaries and animal stories. She loved taking long rides through the country with her family and was ready to go any time, especially when she knew there was ice cream at the Minerva Dairy.
She started sewing when she was a young girl and also did embroidery work. At age 85, she bought a new sewing machine and started making quilt patches, with the help of her daughter, daughter-in-law and son, they were made into lovely quilts, which the family will always cherish. She retired from Star Bronze in 1980 after 17 years of service.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty L. (Don) Hons of Beloit; son, James D. (Marjorie) Burchfield of N. Benton; a sister, Bernice Riley of Michigan; eight grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
Jeraldine was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John E. Burchfield in 1993; a brother, Kenneth Martin and sister, Lucille Jaynes.
A memorial service will be held on Fri., June 5, 2009, at 11:00 am at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Rev. Herbert Smith of the Home Mission Church officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Alliance Citadel at 57 W. Main St., Alliance, OH 44601
