Joan Elizabeth Kerns age 71, of Alliance, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday, September 16, 2004, surrounded by her children, after an 18 month battle with cancer.
Born in Napoleon, Ohio on September 7, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Loreta Schell. She was a former employee of The McNeil Corp. in Akron and Norell Health Care in Canton. Joan had been a resident of Stark County since 1977.
She was a former member of the choir at The Chapel in Akron. Since moving to Alliance she was also a member of the Mount Union Choral, the Mount Union Women's Club and volunteered at the Good Samaritan Clinic. She attended both Jackson Friends and Alliance Friends Churches.
Also preceded in death by her husband Walter R. (Jack) Kerns in 1984, two brothers, Melvin and Maurice Schell.
Survived by daughter Kathleen Bagley of Canton; daughter and son-in-law, Christa and Michael Chappuis of North Canton; sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Mindy Kerns of Daytona Beach FL; Kevin and Robin Kerns of North Canton; Keith and Sherrie Kerns of Alliance; eight grandchildren Aaron and Starla McClure, Joanie McClure, Sarah Seegott, Andrew Rositer, Matthew Kerns, Courtney Chappuis, Scott Chappuis, and Kara Kerns; two great-grandchildren, Cory and Jack McClure. Sister Frances Taylor of Jacksonville, FL, and several special nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law also survive her.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor David Tebbs officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday and also one hour prior to the service on Monday. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations may be made to Alliance Visiting Nurses and Hospice.
