Joan Doreen Raynes, age 89, of Alliance, died at 5:10 p.m. Friday December 28, 2012, at Crandall Medical Center.
Joan was born November 29, 1923 in Sheffield, United Kingdom, to Harold Herbert and Hilda Maude (Harlow) Smith.
Joan attended English Public Schools in Sheffield, and Grenoside, up to the "O" level. During the 1960's, she was the Steubenville Public School Secretary, during the 1970's, a Youngstown School Secretary, and from 1940-1947, worked in the County Council Business Office, in Sheffield, England. During WWII, she was a Fire Watch Co-Ordinator, along with her best friend Beryl, she was one of the first women fire watchers during WWII in Sheffield. She would stand on the roof of the County Council Business Office during air raids in the Blitz to put out incendiary bombs.
She served in the Civil Defense as a Firefighter during WWII in England, and served in the Report and Control Center in Sheffield, NALGO, National Associaton of Local Government Offices.
Joan was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the church bell choir, and member of United Methodist Women, and church bible study.
Survivors include two sons, Rev. Philip R. (Allyson) Raynes of Rootstown and Dr. Christopher David Harlow (Laura) Raynes, of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren, David (Denise) Raynes of Rocky River, Kathleen (Brandon) Steed of Ashley, OH, Jeremy Raynes of Phoenix, AZ, Paul (Renee) Pilat, Adam (Melinda) Pilat, Carie Pilat (Amy Young); great-grandchildren, Katrina and Brianna Raynes, Josua Dawson, Megan Hoyt, Brittany and Rachel Pilat, Jeremy Pilat, and Jonathan Steed; one brother-in-law, Peter Gregory Raynes of Surrey, England; and most dear friends, Charles and Martha McClaugherty and daughters, Helen Cosner and Anna Cordova.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, and her husband, Rev. William Robert Raynes, whom she married September 20, 1947, and who died July 15, 2011.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2013 at the Bennett Chapel at Copeland Oaks with Rev. Allan Zagray officiating.
