John B. "Bibber" Blaser, age 71, of Alliance, went home to be with the Lord on Friday May 19, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.
He was born April 12, 1946 in Akron, Ohio to Thurman and Mary Louise (Brand) Blaser.
A 1964 graduate of Alliance High School, he attended the College of Wooster, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Alpha. John worked for the Consolidated Rail Corporation from 1970 to 2000, primarily as a Cost Analyst.
He also served 4 terms on Alliance City Council from 1992 through 1999. In 2000 he was appointed by the Mayor to the Director of Public Safety and Service position for the City of Alliance where he served for 12 years before retiring in 2012.
A member of First Baptist Church, John served on the Board of Trustees, Child Care Board, Property Team, and as the Finance Chairman.
John was active in fundraising many years for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and very involved with his sons' Cub Scout activities.
In 2012, John and Karen were named Alliance Citizens of the Year; and he joined the AHS Foundation Board of Trustees the same year.
An avid sports fan, especially football, he followed Alliance High School, Mount Union and other Ohio teams. He took special interest in whichever Division 1 football team his son-in-law Alex was coaching.
Survivors include his wife, Karen (Corbi) Blaser; three children: Christopher J. (Stacy) Blaser, Scott R. Blaser, and Rebecca C. (Alex) Grinch; grandson, Tyler and granddaughter, Corbi; brothers, Ted (Nanette) Blaser and Keith Blaser; sister, Barbara (Frank) Wolz; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Steve Rhodes officiating.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home.
Interment will be at Mount Union Cemetery.
