John M. Essick, age 60, of Alliance, died at 7:40 p.m., Sunday, July 25, 2010 at his home.
He was born, December 11, 1949, in Alliance, Ohio, to Ford and Jane (Armstrong) Essick and was an Alliance resident since his birth.
John was a 1967 graduate of Alliance High School, and a 1971 graduate of Mount Union College. He was Executive Director of the Alliance-Minerva Chapter of the American Red Cross and formerly employed by Damon Chemical Co.
A member of the Christ United Methodist Church, John was a current member of the Friendship II Sunday School Class, Usher, Liturgist Co-Ordinator and Staff Parish Relations Committee. He was formerly a member of the trustees, worship committee, and finance committee of his church, member of the Alliance Lions Club, where he served as a past president and was also Rose Day Routing Chair for many years. He was honored with the prestigious award of the Melvin E. Jones Fellowship and also Lion of the Year. He belonged to the BPOE No. 467 of Alliance, American Legion Post No. 166, Boy Scout Troop 50 Eagle Scout, Troop Committee chair and former Assistant Scout Master. John enjoyed woodworking and fishing in Nakina, Ontario, Canada.
John was a United States Army Veteran from 1971-1972.
He is survived by his wife, Donna E. (Messenheimer) Essick, of Alliance, whom he married October 1, 1983; daughters, Jan M. Essick and Amy L. Essick both of the home; mother and father-in-law, Phyllis and William Messenheimer of Alliance; and sister-in-law, Linda L. Hendershot of Monroe, Michigan and her children, Sara E. and Stephen K. Hendershot. He is also survived by his faithful dog, Millie.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and a special friend, Aerold "Smitty" Smith.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Rev. Karl Stonebraker, Rev. Dave Kowaleski and Rev. Dave Hostettler officiating. Friends may call from 1 - 3 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
