Judith K. Swartz, age 64, of Alliance died at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at her home.
She was born in New Castle, Indiana, June 13, 1945, to Anthony and Sara Margaret (Sanders) Janulis.
Judy was a member of the First Friends Church and the Alliance Woman's Club.
She was educated in New Castle Community Schools and graduated third in her class in 1963. She received her Bachelor from Butler University in elementary education in 1967. While at Butler, she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, SNEA (Student National Education Association), YWCA and Spurs, Chimes and Mortar Board Honorees. She also was a recipient of a General Motors Scholarship while at Butler University. Other honors include Delta Kappa Gamma, Teaching Honorary Society, Alpha Lambda Chapter, Martha Holden Jennings Scholar in 1974, and nominated to the Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America in 1975. She received her Master of Arts from Ball State University in elementary education, and special area in early childhood education in 1969. She took additional courses at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.
For two years, from 1967 to 1969, Judy taught second grade, in Mount Summit, Indiana, first grade, from 1969 to 1970, in New Castle, Indiana, and from 1976 until her retirement in 1993, taught various assignments in Alliance City Schools, mostly at North Lincoln Elementary, grades Kindergarten through First grade and the DPPF tutor for the VIP reading center.
Judy enjoyed swimming, reading, playing bridge, landscaping, and plants and flowers.
Survivors include her daughter, Stacy (Thomas) Carter and two granddaughters, Scout Penelope and Violet Rigby Carter of Portsmouth, Ohio; brothers, James Janulis of Fishers, Indiana, and Richard (Marilyn) Janulis of Tinley Park, Illinois; nieces, Karyn, Jeanie and Eileen; cousins, Cliff and Ann Trees of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and second cousin, David Trees of Vietnam.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A Celebration of Judy's Life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010 at First Friends Church with Pastor Rick Sams officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to service. Interment will be at South Mound Cemetery in New Castle, Indiana.
