Karen S. Conrad, 55, of Allentown, Pa., and formerly of Alliance, died Tuesday with her family by her side after a brief battle with cancer. Karen had a gentle smile and always had a kind word for everyone.
She was born June 27, 1954, in Minerva to H. Shearon Greene and June A. (Reeder) Greene. She graduated in 1972 from Alliance High School and from the University of Akron with an Associate of Business degree, and she attended Walsh College.
Karen operated a bakery in Seville, Ohio. She also worked as a bank teller in Attleboro, Mass., and Brodheadsville, Pa. Karen volunteered at JFK Hospital in Edison, N.J., and Because He Lives food pantry in Woonsocket, R.I., and she was a Girl Scout leader in Lafayette, Ind.
Karen was a former member of Sigma Phi Gamma International Sorority, Kappa Sigma Chapter of Plainville, Mass. She held annual offices and was secretary on the regional level. Karen's thoughtfulness and kind spirit were an inspiration to the sorority.
Karen attended Arnold Mills United Methodist Church in Arnold Mills, R.I., and Effort United Methodist Church in Effort, Pa.
Karen is survived by her husband, Vernon D. "Buzz" Conrad; daughter, Laura (Robert) Meyer of Royersford, Pa.; son, Isaac Conrad of the home; grandson, Carter Meyer; mother, June Greene of Alliance; sister Sharon (Gary) Phillips of Malvern; uncle, Kenneth R. Greene of Norton; aunt, Helen Oesch of New Franklin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ed and Tana Conrad of Homeworth, Ohio; Jerry Conrad and Les Brake of Willow, Alaska; Annette and John Whitacre of Canton, Ohio; and Tim and Nancy Daniels of Alliance, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father; her aunt, Mary Elizabeth Greene; and uncle and aunt, Glen and Beatrice Greene.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home in Alliance with the Rev. Linda A. Shevlin officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.
