Kathleen (Kay) McGregor Hood Johnson, 71, passed away on November 30th at her home in Alliance, Ohio. Kathleen was born in Paterson, New Jersey on January 17, 1938 and was the daughter of John William and Mary McGregor Hood who came to the USA from Kilmarnock, Scotland.
Kay said that in life she enjoyed the best of two worlds: being a Mom to her four children whom she enjoyed and loved so much; and after the children left home, a return to her music career as an accompanist, lecturer, and piano instructor at Mount Union College. Latterly, Kay had been the Director of the Preparatory Division at Mount Union College.
Kay attended Douglas College in New Brunswick, NJ and graduated from Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. She married her college sweetheart, Larry Robert Johnson, whom she met at age seventeen. Kay later earned a Master of Music degree at Kent State University with a focus on Piano Pedagogy. In her spare time, Kay loved gardening, walking (especially on the beach by an ocean), biking, canoeing, and reading.
Kay cherished her private piano students, many of whom are now teachers and church musicians. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, in Corning, New York (1963 to 1975) and Christian Ministries Church in North Canton (1975 to 2009). Kay also directed many choirs in different churches over her lifetime.
Kay is survived by her husband, Larry Johnson; her children, Mary McGregor (Paul) Schmidt, David Emil (Rhoda Sommers) Johnson, Eric Stuart (Rebekah) Johnson, and Susan Ann (Douglas) Schlabach and nine grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Arch (Ellie) Hood.
Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Mary (McGregor) Hood.
