Leah Compton

Leah Compton, age 88, of Sebring, formerly of Alliance, died at 5:50 p.m. Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Crandall Medical Center.
She was born February 13, 1920 in Muncie, Indiana to Dr. E.H. and Cora B. (Benson) Clauser and resided in Alliance since 1947.
Mrs. Compton was a graduate of Ball State College, now Ball State University, in 1941, receiving a Bachelor of Science. She was a nutritionist in charge of food service at Mt. Union College from 1947 through 1953. From 1968 to 1985 she was employed in the service center and bookstore until retiring. Mrs. Compton also worked as a teacher's aid at Lincoln Elementary School.
Leah was a member of Union Avenue United Methodist Church for almost 50 years and was very active with United Methodist Women. Mrs. Compton was affiliated with Baldwin Reed Circle and served as Program I chairman and spiritual life chairman, and was Past Vice President of Carnation Chapter A.A.R.P. She was also a former treasurer of Alliance Area Home Economics Club and former Pink Lady at the Alliance Community Hospital. Leah was a member of the YWCA and a long-time volunteer at the Red Cross.
She is survived by her one son, David L. (Sue Stephenson) Compton of Tinley Park, IL; one daughter, Barbara Jean Compton of Tipp City, OH; one granddaughter, Leslie Marie Keene of Tipp City, OH; one brother, John B. (Vella) Clauser of Bellevue, Washington, and one sister-in-law, Sue Clauser of Yellow Springs, OH.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Eugene James Compton, whom she married on July 25, 1953 and who died February 19, 1997; one sister, Mrs. Jean Angley; and one brother, Mr. Charles E. Clauser.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 5, 2008 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Rev. Hoyte Wilhelm of Union Avenue United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
