Leo J. DeGroff, age 84, of Atwater, died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Robinson Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 5, 1926 in Atwater, Ohio, to Frank M. and Zella (Baker) DeGroff.
Leo was a graduate of the former Atwater High School in the class of 1944 and attended Akron University. He was employed by the Portage County Engineers and by the City of Akron as an engineering technician until his retirement in 1985 after 35 years of service.
Leo was a member of the Atwater United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Holland Society of New York, an expert in genealogy tracing family roots to the founding of New Amsterdam which is now present day New York City. He also helped re-establish the interment records of the Hillside Cemetery in Randolph, Ohio. He also enjoyed gardening and farming.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce (Dutro) DeGroff of Atwater, whom he married December 7, 1957; three sons, Kirk (Patti) DeGroff of Cuyahoga Falls, Todd (Terrie) DeGroff of Randolph and Scott DeGroff of the home; five grandchildren, Nicholas (Caitlin) DeGroff, Jennifer, James, Kristen and Matthew DeGroff; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, June and Evalyn; and two brothers, Gordon and Lawrence.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor William Nicewarner officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Randolph.
