Lucille Givens

On Sunday Jan. 25th, Lucille L. Givens was called home to join her eternal father and her husband Ron.
Lucy was born on Oct. 8, 1924 in Atwater, to her parents Leonard and Ethel (Kump) Freshley. She was a graduate of Kent State University where she majored in Education. She began her teaching career in Hartville, Ohio and retired after 22 years teaching elementary education in the Marlington School District.
She was credited for piloting their kindergarten program and taught first grade for the majority of her career.
Mrs. Givens was a 50 yr. plus member of the Methodist Church, and member of Christ United Methodist Church since September, 1962, where she was a circle member and longtime Sunday School teacher, teaching countless children about her faith in Jesus. She was also the former chairman of the Children's Department.
She was former chairperson of Staff-Parish Relations Committee, taught Sunday School Classes, was a member of United Methodist Women's Society, where she also served as the representative for Christ United Methodist Church, and former Vice-President for community churches. She was also a former chairperson of the Christian Outreach Committee.
She was a former member and officer in Eastern Star, member of the Alliance Woman's Club, Retired Teachers Association, YMCA, and volunteered for the Literacy Program at Rodman Public Library.
Survivors include two sons Reggie Givens and his wife Carrie, and granddaughters Heather, Brooke, Ellie and Leah, and Rick Givens and his wife Sherryle, and grandsons Ryan, Ross, and Pete, and one brother Kenny Freshley of Randolph, Ohio.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ronald E. Givens, whom she married Feb. 7, 1947 and who died Dec. 11, 1985, one sister Marie Cook and one brother Donald Freshley.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor's Hugh Hookway and David Hostetler officiating. Friends may call two hours prior to the service. Interment will be at Marlboro Cemetery.
