Margaret Anna "Marge" Swanson

July 8, 1923 — July 23, 2017

A fulfilled life experienced by Margaret Anna "Marge" Swanson came to a peaceful conclusion early Sunday morning July 23, 2017.
The only child of Margaret and Adolf Langer, Marge, was born July 8, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York.
As a young girl, Marge got to see Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig play baseball, occasionally skipped school to see a matinee show featuring a young singer named Frank Sinatra and as a recent graduate was working the front desk of the Gramercy Park Hotel on December 7, 1941 when the news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor came across the radio. She spent many Saturday nights at the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theater dancing to the big bands of the day including Duke Ellington, Count Bassie, the Dorsey Brothers, and her favorites Artie Shaw and Harry James.
She met and married the love of her life, John Weldon Swanson, and moved to Ohio to begin their lives together. In 1959 they arrived in Alliance, Ohio and she would remain in that home through the passing of her husband until the final days of her own journey.
When her children were grown, Marge began a career at Alliance Super Center, She earned the respect of peers and management serving as an advocate for worker's rights as the shop steward of her local union.
Over the last fifty years, Marge enjoyed frequent family vacations in North Bay, Ontario at the Waltonian Inn. Enjoying the beach and dolphin watching, Marge spent September and October for thirty-three consecutive years with family and friends in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. That streak only ending this past June of 2016 where instead she was able to attend the high school graduation of her granddaughter in Janesville, Wisconsin as well as attend her eldest grandson's beach wedding in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.
She is survived by lifelong best friend Shirley Handrych and Sally Johnson and family members: sons Stephen Engh and partner Mimi Davisson, Martha's Vineyard, MA; John Arthur Swanson and wife Kerry, Mt. Vernon, IL; and daughter Ruth Swanson- Kolm and husband David, Jackson Township, OH; as well as grandchildren Matthew (Kelli) Ours, Samuel Ours, and Kathryn Margaret Swanson.
Our family wishes to thank Ruth for the loving care that she provided to our mother in the last years of her life. We all were able to enjoy years with our mom and grandmother in her home because of the devoted care that Ruth provided to her mom.
A fulfilled life indeed!
A private family service will be held.
