Maria R. Acierni, age 110, of Alliance, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, November 2, 2008 at Community Care Center.
She was born February 14, 1898 in Italy and has lived in the Alliance area since she was 21 years old.
Maria, at the age of 16, showed a tremendous amount of courage and demonstrated a will to live after being buried alive in the aftermath of an earthquake in Avezzano, Italy in the year 1915. She always had a zest for life and had a tremendous will to live.
She later married and became a loving wife to her husband, Ralph Acierni and was a loving and nurturing mother to her children. A joy to her family and friends, she will be sadly missed.
Mrs. Acierni was a high school graduate, a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of the Christopher Columbus Society.
Survivors are her daughter, Erma Zwirner of California; grandchildren, Gary Acierni, Joe Acierni and Ron Acierni, all of Ohio, Mary Kay Smith of Arkansas, Richard Davison of California, Maria Eckiss of Arizona, and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Acierni who died in 1959; and her sons, Tony and Joe Acierni.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
