Maria Marinela Catona, age 56, of Columbus, and formerly of Alliance, passed away at Home Reach Hospice in Columbus, Ohio at 2:14 p.m. June 23, 2007.
She was born Feb. 16, 1951 in Fagaras, Romania to Ioan and Silvia (Gabor) Catona.
Maria Marinela was a graduate of Institutul De Arhitectrua "Ion Mincu" - Bucuresti, Romania Facultatea De Arhitectura si Urbanism and worked as an Architect in Romania for 21 years for I.P.C.M. Brasov Company and an Architect in Columbus, Ohio for two years. She was a member of St. Gregory of Nyssa Orthodox Campus Church in Columbus, Ohio, and enjoyed designing and sewing her own clothing and also made silk flower arrangements and embossed cards for different events.
Survivors include one brother, John D. (Emilia) Catona of Alliance, one sister, Steliana (Dumitru) Apostolescu of Voila, Romania; two nieces, Emily M. Catona of Alliance, and Patricia-Ana-Maria Apostolescu of Romania; and one cousin, Margareta Sherban of Alliance.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two aunts, Mary Sherban and Elena Gabor, and three uncles, Gheorghe and Ioan Gabor, and Aurel Catona.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church with the Very Reverend Father Pantelimon Stanciu officiating. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. A Saracusta Service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery.
