Marilyn L. Gobely

Marilyn L. Gobely, age 85, of Alliance, passed away at 4:13 a.m., Friday, October 13, 2017, at Salem Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 10, 1932, in Freeburg, Ohio, to Virgil and Bessie (Shuster) Hahn and was a lifelong Alliance resident.
A 1950 graduate of Louisville High School, Marilyn was a professional musician playing with the Frank Stanger Polka Band. She played for 39 years at Smith Grange for round and square dancing and was a private music teacher since her teenage years.
She was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ where she served as a choir director, pianist and organist.
Marilyn also was an alternate organist for numerous churches in the area and played for the Kiwanis Club since 1976 and Rotary Club for many years. She also played every Wednesday at the Polish Club in Canton.
As a member of Penn Ohio Polka Pals (P.O.P.P.) she completed numerous albums with various musicians. "Penn Ohio Pals Souvenir Edition" won a Grammy nomination in 1989 for Album of the Year in the Polka category. Her contribution with Joe Fedorchak was voted Album of the Year 1994 by the American Slovenian Polka Foundation of Cleveland, OH and her participation with Walter Ostanek, "Canada's Polka King", won her a Grammy in 1995.
Survivors include step-children; Larry D. Gobely of Millington, MD, Kennard L. Gobely of Clear Brook, VA, Karen S. Beatty of Herndon, VA and Lynne A. Wakefield of Springfield, VA; four step-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dwight I. Gobely whom she married March 10, 1963 and who passed away April 17, 1995; and brother, Lavern Hahn.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 20, 2017 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Allen Kahler officiating. Friends may call from Noon to 2 p.m.
Interment will be at Bethel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethel United Church of Christ, 25701 Buck Rd, Beloit, Ohio 44609.
