Martha Hopkins Lehnis was born July 31, 1913 in Alliance, Ohio to the late George M. & Mary (Auld) Hardesty. Alliance area resident most of her life-lived in Akron, Cleveland, and Naples, Florida for a short period of time. Martha is a descendant of the Auld pioneering industrial family of Alliance, Ohio. On July 11, 1936, Martha married Charles (Tim) R. Hopkins. Tim Hopkins died in 1967. In later years, she married Milton A. Lehnis on April 23, 1983 and made their home in Naples, Florida. Milt died in 1990. Martha graduated from Alliance High School in 1932 and attended Mount Union College, Class of 1936. She worked in the fashion sector for many years doing personal shopping for department stores in Canton and Akron. Martha enjoyed world traveling with family and friends over the years, including visiting all states in the USA. One of Martha's lifelong passions was being active within the community. Martha enjoyed entertaining family and friends and took great pride in her many organization memberships. She joined First United Presbyterian Church in April of 1926. Martha also was a member of the Mount Union College Woman's Club, Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Flower Garden Club, Mount Union College Alumni, Alliance Women's Club, Alliance Country Club, Alliance Republican Club, Friends of Rodman Public Library, Alliance Community Concert Association, Alliance Symphony Orchestra, American Association of University Women, and the Alliance Panhellenic. She enjoyed contributing to many charities along the way. Martha, during WW2, volunteered at American Red Cross where she served as a driver in the motor corporation for the blood bank in Alliance. She was an avid bridge player with friends at the Alliance Women's Club, and also enjoyed golfing, tennis, and swimming. In the past few years of her life, Martha enjoyed time with friends at Copeland Oaks Retirement Community and Sterling House.
Martha is survived by her son William Kirk (Marcia) Hopkins of Hudson, Ohio, her
granddaughter Katie Hopkins of Chicago, IL, a grandson Will Hopkins of Alliance, Ohio, and a great-granddaughter Cortney Hopkins of Alliance, Ohio. Martha also is survived by her step-children Thomas M. (Mary Ann) Lehnis of North Port, FL, Terry Lehnis of Palm Springs, CA, Dave (Jane) Lehnis of Olympia, Washington, Julie Lehnis of Seattle, Washington, Clare Lehnis of NC and Mary Lehnis of Ypsilanti, Mich. Martha also is survived by many dear cousins, John Auld (Nancy) of Franklin-Independence, Richard (Ruth) Jones & Robert (Betty) Jones of Alliance, Jean Coe of Alliance, Lois (Bill) Bossert of Alliance, Barbara Auld (James) Jones of Amelia Island, FL, Ellen Gilbert of Sonoma, CA, Ann Sawyer of Perrysburg, Ohio, Charlene Calvin of Akron, Ohio, Nancy (Fred) Lepley of Grosse Point Woods, MI. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary (Auld) Hardesty, brother John Hardesty, and husbands Charles R. Hopkins and Milton A. Lehnis. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
