Martha Scott Wheaton died Monday, January 19, 2015, at Crandall Medical Center.
She was born June 7, 1926, in Alliance, Ohio, to Dr. Joseph M. Scott and Ruth (Earseman) Scott and grew up as the daughter of a respected Mount Union College professor.
Martha graduated from Alliance High School in 1944 and attended Vassar College on a full scholarship in 1944-1945 and graduated from Mount Union College in 1947. She then taught in Columbus, Alliance and surrounding schools from 1947-1953.
She celebrated 62 years of marriage with her loving and supportive husband, Harry O. Wheaton, who preceded her in death in September of 2013.
Martha had a love of books, music and sports throughout her life and was an avid reader, averaging a book a week for many years. She enjoyed classical music and sang in the college choirs at Vassar and Mount Union. She was a life-long devoted Cleveland Indians fan. Always a social person, she and Harry enjoyed strong family relationships and friendships throughout their lives.
She was a born leader and joiner and belonged to Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Psi Kappa Omega honorary, Alliance Women's Club and Coterie and Sorosis clubs in Alliance. She and Harry were longtime members of the First Immanuel United Church of Christ and had served as secretary of its Trinity Circle.
Martha is survived by her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Barbara S. Reys and Scott E. Reys of Shaker Heights; and her close cousins, Alice Kintner of Exeter, New Hampshire and Eleanor Carter of Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Bennett Chapel at Copeland Oaks with Pastor Neal Mann officiating.
The family would like to thank the staff at Crandall Medical Center, especially Resa, Christie, Connie, Brian and Danielle, and Hospice of the Valley for their exceptional care of Martha.
