Mary Louise Ryan Cooey Edgecombe, 90 of Alliance, Ohio and Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 13 in Alliance following an extended illness.
Born Jan. 31, 1920 in Alliance, she was a 1937 graduate of Alliance High School and attended what was then Walsh College in Canton.
Mrs. Edgecombe was an executive secretary most of her working life, including more than 35 years as the executive secretary to three plant managers at Babcock & Wilcox Tubular Products in Alliance. She retired from Babcock & Wilcox in January 1987.
She was active in the Alliance community. She was the last surviving founder of the Catholic Women's Club; a founder and past president of the Alliance Secretarial Association; a former officer of the Alliance Women's Club; a member and past president of the Alliance Garden Club; and a member since 1943 of Alliance Country Club, where she was the first female secretary of the club's board of directors. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School, and later, when the new parish was created, was a member of Regina Coeli Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband of 19 years, David Edgecombe; her daughter, Kit Cooey (Rod) Bradshaw of Longwood, Fla.; a stepson, Richard (Alexandra) Edgecombe of Fox Chapel, Pa.; four stepdaughters, Susan (Paul) Gill of Maximo, Ohio, Patricia (Duke) Martin of Escondido, Calif., Sarah Edgecombe of Redwood City, Calif. and Anne (Greg) Jones of Rocky River, Ohio; three grandchildren, Heather Bradshaw (Sean) Ells of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Brent Bradshaw of Orlando, Fla. and Meredith Bradshaw (Matthew) Walker of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Ells and Natalie Ells of Altamonte Springs; two nieces, Deborah Dawson of Alliance and Molly (Bill) Kramer of North Royalton, Ohio; and a nephew, Dennis (Ann) Dawson of Geneseo, N.Y.
Mrs. Edgecombe's sister and only sibling, Catherine "Kate" Dawson, died less than 24 hours later, on Friday, Jan. 14, 2011. Mrs. Edgecombe was preceded in death by her parents, William and Elsie (Frank) Ryan; and her first husband, D. William Cooey on Jan. 13, 1945.
Mrs. Edgecombe and Mrs. Dawson will have simultaneous visitations from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, 75 S. Union Ave., Alliance. A Mass of Celebration for both Mrs. Edgecombe and Mrs. Dawson will take place on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment for Mrs. Edgecombe will be at Mount Union Cemetery.
