Mary J. Lee, age 92, passed away peacefully at her home November 13, 2014, in Whitehall, Montana, with her family around her.
She was born February 12, 1922, in Girard, Ohio. Her parents, Albert and Marta (Popovich) Yamsek, emigrated from Slovenia. She grew up on the family farm and attended Vienna High School.
Mary and George Lee, Jr. were married June 6, 1942, before George entered World War II and served in the United States Army in Europe. They were married for 52 years.
After the war, they raised their family in Alliance, Ohio. Together and with the help of family and friends, they constructed a beautiful home in Beechwood. In 1963, they moved to Mount Vernon, Indiana, later returning to live in Clinton, Ohio.
Mary graduated from the University of Evansville in 1969, with a degree in education and taught elementary school for many years in both Ohio and Indiana.
Mary bought a home and moved to Whitehall, Montana in 2004.
Mary was an accomplished oil painter and produced beautiful hand-sewn quilts. She was a member of the Whitehall Garden Club. In her honor, the Garden Club established the annual Mary Lee Award for Artistic Expression of Flowers. She started painting in 1986.
Mary was well loved and respected for her creative talents, her grace, strength, beauty and intelligence. She was an inspiration to many others.
Survivors include her son, Don E. (Sharon) Lee; and daughter, Valerie McOuat, both of Whitehall, Montana; four grandchildren, Jaydee Moreau, Dana Lee, Heather Schuler, and Travis McOuat; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers and a sister.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, December 5, 2014, at Regina Coeli Catholic Church. Friends may call from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, December 4, 2014, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery.
