Mary Ellen Russell age 104, of Sebring, formerly of Alliance, died at 12:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Crandall Medical Center.
She was born June 21, 1905 in Tiffin, Ohio to William H. and Catherine M. (Davis) Bennion and has resided in the Alliance area since 1921.
A member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, she was a former president and directrice of the Altar Guild and member of the Church Women United of Alliance. She also was a former member of the Alliance Woman's Club.
Mary Ellen lived in many places while traveling with her father and mother to towns or cities where William Bennion could ply his trade as a kiln worker making pottery. Their homes were in Tiffin Ohio, Quebec, Canada, Kittanning and Ford City, Pennsylvania and Sebring Ohio. In 1923, eighteen years old and in Sebring High School, she met and married John.
After her husband's death, Mary Ellen devoted herself to her family and her church, Trinity Episcopal in Alliance. Over the years she ran the church's Thrift Shop, served spaghetti dinners, worked pancake breakfasts and was head of the Altar Guild. In her 80's, she delivered meals on wheels. She was fiercely proud of both her Irish and English heritage and was a true Christian lady.
Survivors include her sons, Ronald L. Russell of Minerva, Gerald W. Russell of Apache Junction, Arizona and Dr. Gregory D. Russell of California; 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John Lowell Russell whom she married November 30, 1923 and who died May 30, 1972; sons, Richard B. Russell and John L. Russell, Jr.; granddaughter, Camellia (Russell) Natale; four sisters, Charlotte Delves, Margaret McPhail, Ethel Moulton and Grayce Bennion; one brother, Robert Bennion; and daughters-in-law, Attorney Joanne (Block) Russell, Janet (Quist) Russell, Ethel (Nagy) Russell and Jean (Kloos) Russell; brothers-in-law, Wendel, Wade, Rex, Claude, Robert; and sister-in-law, Ruth (Russell) Edwards.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2010, at the Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Kip Colgrove officiating. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church Altar Guild, 1200 S. Union Ave. Alliance, Ohio 44601 or to the Alliance Domestic Violence Shelter.
