She's Resting in the Arms of Jesus
Mrs. Mary Lee Thurmond, the second child of eleven, made her transition to her Heavenly home on November 15, 2013, at Akron City Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Blaine, Mississippi, on January 7, 1937, to the union of Frank and Aria Jones and relocated to Alliance, as an infant.
Mary attended the Alliance Public Schools and worked at various jobs before her retirement from Mt. Union College.
In 1957, she married the late Earl C. Thurmond, Sr., who preceded her in death on January 18, 2011, after celebrating almost fifty-four years of marriage.
She leaves in God's care and an honor to her legacy, four devoted children, two sons, Mr. Ronald Jones and Mr. Earl C. Thurmond, Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Earlene Dailey and Ms. Charlietha "Charlie" Thurmond; 16 loving grandchildren; Mr. Corey Blue, Ms. Nicole Carter, Ms. Jolean LaShelle, Mr. Justin E. and Ms. Talitha Dailey, Mr. Cortez C. (Contessa) Thurmond, Mrs. Cortezya (Charles) Threat, Mrs. Ariel Marie (Steven) DeVine, Mr. Joseph Earl Taylor "Boss" Thurmond, Ms. Nicole and Ms. Marshelle McElroy, Ms. Tamar Renee Lawson, Mr. Brian, Zachary, Jordan, and Earl C. "Guido" Thurmond, III; and 22 adoring great-grandchildren. Also surviving are the remainder of her siblings that she sacrificed for, loved as her own and helped to rear, after the death of her parents; two brothers, Mr. Clifford Jones and Mr. Jerome Jones; five sisters, Ms. Willie Mae Jones, Ms. Catherine Jones, Mrs. Viola Oaks-Carpenter, Mrs. Marilyn Cooper and Ms. Connie Jones; her sister by choice, Mrs. Deloris Nelson; three sisters-in-law; Mrs. Mary Lucille Smith, Mrs. Bobbie Lee Stewart and Mrs. Anna Mae (Clifford) Glynn; three brothers-in-law, Mr. Joseph (Dora) Thurmond, Jr., Mr. William (Pauline) Jarman and Mr. Collier Banks; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Mary was a kind, loving person, who loved the Lord and kept her faith in Him even as her illness invaded her body. She met no strangers, for her infectious smile and laughter, her willingness to share her love for others and her God-given patience made her well known and loved by everyone throughout the city of Alliance, up to and during the time of her illness. She will be sorely missed.
Beside her parents and husband, Mrs. Thurmond was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, twins, Torrence and Tristan Dailey; son-in-law, Mr. Joseph T. Dailey, Jr.; two brothers, Mr. John T. Jones and Mr. Leoarn Jones; sister, Mrs. Helen R. Matthews; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Denise Jones, and Mrs. June and Rosa B. Haliburton; four brothers-in-law; Mr. Eddie Hue Jarman, Mr. Robert Earl Banks, Sr., Mr. Robert Jarman Sr., and Mr. Otis Lewis Curry, Sr.
Services will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, November 23, 2013, at the New Zion Baptist Church with Pastor W. Max Millender officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Mount Union Cemetery. The family will also receive friends at the family home, 1172 S. Mahoning Avenue, Alliance, Ohio following the services on Saturday.
