Melvin F. "Mel" Oyster, age 86 of Alliance, passed away at 10:15 a.m., Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born May 18, 1928, in Louisville, Ohio, to Frank and Mabel (Wingert) Oyster and has been a lifelong area resident.
Melvin was a 1946 graduate of Alliance High School and a 1959 graduate of ICS Engineering School. Melvin was employed as a senior technologist at the Alliance Babcock and Wilcox Research Center for 42 years.
He attended the Science Hill Community Church, loved music and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed bowling, working crossword puzzles, dancing, playing Euchre and other card games, traveling and gardening and was a Cleveland Indians fan. He loved family gatherings and his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Dorothy (May) Oyster whom he married, September 10, 1950; sons, Duane Oyster of Alliance and Dean (Rhonda Buck) Oyster of Parker, CO; daughter, Denise Oyster (Michael) O'Neal of Ligonier, PA; brothers, Ray (Pat) Oyster of Columbus, GA and Herbert (Joan) Oyster of Alliance; sister, Beverly Karlen of Alliance; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Shawn) McGoff of Aurora, CO, Sarah (Geoff) Brogan of Dayton, Jill (Danny) Wilson of Lacey, WA and Captain Daniel O'Neal of Columbia, SC; two step-grandchildren, Sgt. Michael Scott (Elvie) O'Neal, of Mehlingen, Germany and Major Amber (Vic) Miller of Goldsboro, NC; and six great-grandchildren, Emily Moore, Chloe and Connor McGoff, Amelia Wilson, Ashley O'Neal and Ella Millerchip. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth (Oyster) Snode; and two brothers-in-law, Jay Karlen and Melvin Snode.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 30, 2014, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Jonathan Truax and Pastor Joshua Smith of Science Hill Community Church co-officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
