Melvin Jacob "Bummie" Snode, age 94, of Alliance, passed away at 3 a.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Altercare of Alliance.
He was born August 3, 1919, on the Snode farm on McCallum Avenue in Alliance, to Benjamin and Ida (Pauli) Snode.
Melvin attended two one-room schools, Union Grove and Science Hill, and graduated from Alliance High School. He graduated from Mount Union College in 1940. He then received a Master's Degree in counseling from Kent State University in 1951 after his return from the war.
Melvin, a veteran of the United States Army, served during World War II under General Patton. He was a member of the 243rd Field Artillery Battalion earning the rank of Sergeant. While serving in the European Theatre he participated in the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp.
His first teaching job was at Fairmount Children's Home, where he also served as marble coach. He also taught at Middlebranch and Glenwood High Schools and finished his career at Marlington High School as a teacher and guidance counselor.
Melvin and his siblings, Kenneth and Alda turned the family farm into Tannenhauf Golf Club on McCallum Avenue in 1959. If you were ever looking for Bummie, he could be found on the red tractor, mowing, or hunting for stray golf balls in the lake or trees.
Melvin was a member of Science Hill Community Church, Charter member of the Lexington Ruritan's Club and Science Hill Historical Society.
He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing cards. His love of sports was evident to all that knew him. He was known for his "philosophical sayings" that are used by many of his friends and family today.
Recently Melvin was Marlington High School's first community member to be inducted into the Hall of Athletic Excellence for his outstanding support of Marlington Athletics during his lifetime.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Anderson) Snode, whom he married December 26, 1965; children, Connie (John) Flynn, Pam (Chuck) Boone, Trudy Porter, Rick (Laura) Snode; step-children, Lorie (John) Merryman, Mark (Sheree) Chapman and Debbie Chapman; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Teresa Ann; first wife, Ruth (Oyster) Snode; brother, Kenneth Snode; sister, Alda Williamson; and great-granddaughter, Grace Marie Porter.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 14, 2013, at Science Hill Community Church with the Rev. Jonathan Truax officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, October 13, 2013, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Marlboro Cemetery.
