Nick Stoia

July 30, 1926 — May 30, 2017

We have been blessed to have had him for 90 years on this earth. We have learned valuable lessons from Nick Stoia. Brown bananas and sometimes black... store in refrigerator. Never throw away a rotten apple. He could always find a speck of good in a rotten apple. Just like that speck of good in the apple, he always saw the good in people.
Nick was very generous and taught us how to work and to work hard. He taught us integrity.
Nick served in the U.S. Navy as a radar man 3rd class Petty Officer on the ship LCS 52. He was later employed at Alliance Electric, Transue & Williams, and Maloney Door. He retired at the age of 55 from the Alliance City Health/Community Development Department where he was the city housing inspector.
Nick refinished antiques back in the 70s and 80s and later enjoyed creating wood carvings. Over the years he spent many hours visiting his friends in nursing homes and having coffee in McDonalds.
Nick married Helen Codrea in 1951. (65 years) They attended Alliance First Friends church for many years. Nick and Helen lived in 18 different homes in Alliance over the years. They had many of them built and he would do all of the finish work. He was a perfectionist. Nick and Helen also spent some of their winters in LeHigh Acres, Fl. Up until 3 weeks ago they lived independently together having conversations over their meals of cheerios, brown bananas, and half of a muffin with peanut butter and jelly.
Last but not least, the most important lesson we learned from Nick was to love Jesus and pray often. Nick gave his life to Christ and confidently knew where he would spend eternity. His family has peace because of our faith in what is written in scripture. Acts 16:31 says if we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ we will be saved. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Sophia Stoia who were immigrants from Romania; and a sister-in-law, Isabelle Stoia.
Survivors include his wife, Helen (Codrea) Stoia; children, Nick Stoia (Sharon) of Irmo, South Carolina and Mary Lynn Simmons (John-deceased) of Alliance; grandchildren, Jeff Simmons (Amy), Jennifer Forrest (Andy), Brett Stoia (Kristin), and Aubree Stoia; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Drew Simmons, Hayley, Torrie, and Audrey Forrest; and brother, Ralph Stoia (Loretta).
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 3 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Sams of Alliance First Friends church officiating. There will be no visitation and the one hour service will begin promptly at 6 p.m.
