Norbert Kress

Norbert L. "Shorty" Kress, age 91, of Alliance, died peacefully at his home on November 2, 2010.
He was born April 8, 1919, in Louisville, Ohio, to John and Erma (Haidet) Kress.
Shorty attended St. Louis and Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Schools.
His passion was cars, selling in the Alliance area for 32 years, retiring in 1985. He was employed by the former Shoellhorn Ford, Haller Ford, Rinehart Ford, Thompson Mercury, and Martig Chrysler dealerships. He also sold cars for Lavery Chevrolet and Wally Armour Chrysler dealerships and received many sales awards. He attended the Dale Carnegie School.
He was a member of Regina Coeli Catholic Church, charter member of the George D. Worth American Legion Post No. 574 of N. Georgetown, life member of the D.A.V Chapter 50, and the VFW Post No.167 of Alliance.
Shorty was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. He served in the 91st Division Company, 5th Army, serving in Italy, 361st Regiment, Combat Infantry Division. He received two Purple Hearts, an Oak Leaf Cluster and three Bronze Stars.
He attended several NASCAR races, was a vintage car enthusiast, and enjoyed playing cards and bowling.
Survivors include his wife, Mary A. (Zwick) Kress, whom he married November 29, 1941; his children, Robert (Leslie) Kress of Anderson, South Carolina, Beverly (John) Yaggi and Donna (John) Zupanic, both of Alliance, William (Arlene) Kress of Burleson, Texas, Dwight (Rhonda) Kress of Louisville, Linda (Thomas) Deland of Broomfield, Colorado and Patricia (Greg) Nutial of Alliance; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sister, Rita Whitman of Hartville; and brother, Francis Kress of Cuyahoga Falls.
Shorty was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Tommy Deland; three sisters, Marie Brahler, Dolores Schnase, and Mary Carter; and three brothers, Richard, Merton and Delmer Kress.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2010, at Regina Coeli Catholic Church with Fr. Mike Seifert officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
