Norman L. Read, age 69 of Alliance, died at home at 8:30 a.m. January 16, 2006 following an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 12, 1936 in Bantam, Ohio to Norman A. and Lucile A. (Hughes) Read and lived most of his life in Alliance.
Mr. Read graduated in 1956 from Alliance High School and was employed by Alliance Machine Company as a Steel fitter and was also employed by the Timken Company in Canton.
He attended Vine Street United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Steelworkers Union and the Alliance Senior Center.
He was an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed spending time with this family.
Mr. Read served as a Staff Sgt. with the Ohio National Guard from 1954 to 1962.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Louise (Kannal) Read, whom he married Aug. 16, 1959; one son, Chris A. (Deborah) Read of Alliance; one daughter, Cathy L. (Joseph) Phillips of Pataskala, Ohio; and one grandson, Samuel J. Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one infant sister.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Thomas Fish officiating. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
