Pearl Jeanette Walker Ferner, age 98, of Alliance, died at 6:27 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Alliance Community Hospital after a short illness. She was born January 21, 1910 in Washington Township, to Vernon and Vietta (Betz) Walker and resided in Alliance all her life. She had been a resident of Copeland Oaks since 1999. Mrs. Ferner attended Grange Hill School, Alliance High School and Kent State Normal School. She taught school from 1929 to 1935 at several one room schools in Washington Township. Later Mrs. Ferner taught fifth grade at South Lincoln School in Alliance for 16 years before her retirement in 1973. She was a member of First Immanuel United Church of Christ, former member of Alliance Women's Club, former member and treasurer of the Alliance Retired Teacher's Association and of the Tennysonian Club. Survivors include her daughter, Janice E. Sulkes of Highland Heights. KY; her son, James A. (Elizabeth) Ferner of Battle Ground WA; three grandchildren, James Ferner, Jr. of Battle Ground WA, Linda (Paul) Roberge of Acton, MA, Suzanne (Thomas) Cowper of Snohomish, WA; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Jenna Cowper and Jacquelyn and Francine Roberge. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Terence J. Ferner in 1997; and a sister, Hazel Slusser of Hartville. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Bennett Chapel at Copeland Oaks. Private interment will be at Mount Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Copeland Oaks Life Care Fund.
