R. James Newkirk, age 87, of Alliance, died at 2:24 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at his home.
A graduate of Alliance High School, Jim was employed as a Radio Salesman with WDPN-Q92 for 43 years. Jim, devoted his life to family, community and country.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and formerly ushered there. He was a life member of both Alliance Elks Post 3467, VFW Post 1036 and a member of the American Legion Post 166 and the Alliance City Health Board for over 50 years.
Jim was a United States Coast Guard Veteran and participated in the landing at Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion.
Surviving him are his daughter, Christine (Phil) Custer and granddaughters; Sasha Custer and Nicole and her husband, Morgan Royce, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is also survived by three great granddaughters, Lauren, Ruby and Kindell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Jane White.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, December 15, 2008 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. BPOE #467 will conduct services at 5:30 p.m. Sunday evening prior to visitation. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.
