Rachel E. Huffman-LaNave, age 55 of Alliance, died at 2:45 a.m. June 21, 2006 at McCrea Manor. She was born January 10, 1951 in Alliance to Robert E. and Dorothy E. (Green) Huffman Sr. and was a lifelong resident. A 1968 graduate of Alliance High School, she then graduated Cum Laude from Kent State University with a B.S. in criminal justice. Rachel worked for Alliance Manufacturing Company for five years prior to joining the Alliance Police Department in 1973. Most will remember her as a Juvenile Detective with her partner Det. Bryce Conway. She was the first female detective and command officer in the history of the Alliance Police Department, retiring as a Lt. in 2002 after twenty eight years of service. During this time, Rachel served as Asst. Commander and Commander of the Alliance Police Reserve Unit. Mrs. LaNave was a past president and current financial secretary of the Fraternal Order of Police. She was active over thirty years with the Alliance School Safety Patrol Trip to Washington D.C. Rachel was a former Carnation Festival Board Member and a member of Vine Street United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband Michael LaNave of Alliance whom she married December 18, 2005; parents Robert E. and Dorothy E. (Green) Huffman Sr; sister Betty Jo (Earl) Blevins; twin sister Ruth Springer, all of Alliance; sister June (Richard) Billings of Clarkston, Michigan and brother Robert (Jolene) Huffman Jr. of Sebring. She is also survived by nephews Glenn Blevins, Christopher Springer, Neale Billings, Michael Springer and nieces Melissa (Blevins) Burton and April (Springer) Longfellow. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Baltzer officiating. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. An F.O.P. service will he held at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Alliance-Minerva Chapter of the American Red Cross, 222 South Arch Ave, Alliance, OH 44601.
