Ray C. Sluss age 91, of Copeland Oaks in Sebring, passed away at 6:50 p.m., Friday, September 14, 2018.
The son of Howard and Anna (Kurtz) Sluss of rural Louisville, Ray was born September 30, 1926.
Ray was a 1944 graduate of Marlboro High School, received his Bachelor's Degree from Ashland College and his Master's Degree from Ohio State University.
After high school teaching and coaching for two years and being an elementary school principal, he spent thirty-eight years in the school textbook publishing industry: eleven years selling textbooks in Ohio for Row Peterson & Company, eight years in sales management and five years as vice president and textbook publisher for the Harper & Row school department, five years as national sales manager for the Rand McNally school textbook department and nine years as vice president for Riverside Publishing Company. During his years as publisher, he served on the Harper & Row Corporate Board of Directors.
Ray was listed in the Marquis publication of Who's Who in the Midwest.
Ray and his family lived for 44 years in the Chicago north shore suburb of Winnetka. During those years, he was very active in the Methodist Trinity Church of the North Shore. After retiring to Ohio, he joined the Union Avenue United Methodist Church.
Ray enjoyed traveling. He and Ellen toured all fifty states and over forty countries. He especially enjoyed Europe, Australia and China, and claimed walking on the Great Wall of China was his biggest travel thrill.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Ellen (Stoffer) Sluss; their three children, Dr. Michael (Joyce) Sluss of Wilsonville, Oregon, Mollie Sluss of Bradenton, Florida and Andrew (Pamela) Sluss of Royal Oak, Michigan; five grandchildren, Rebecca Sluss of Bloomington, Minnesota, Daniel (Katie) Sluss of Seattle, Washington, David (Becca) Sluss of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Laura Sluss of Heath, Ohio, Matthew (Amanda) Sluss of Royal Oak, Michigan and four great-grandchildren, Emma and Matthew Sluss of Seattle, Washington and Adalyn and Isaiah Sluss of Royal Oak Michigan.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Miriam Geist.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Copeland Oaks Bennett Chapel in Sebring with Rev. Coralee Cox officiating.
