Raymond Eugene Asher, age 77, of Sebring, passed away at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, December 9, 2010, at Crandall Medical Center after a 3 year battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born December 8, 1933, in Bakersfield, CA, the oldest son of Wyley and Hazel (Mitchel) Asher and has resided in the vicinity since 1957.
Ray grew up in Sapulpa, OK where he was a graduate of Sapulpa High School. He attended Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana where he received his Bachelor in education in 1957. After graduation, Ray started teaching in the Alliance school system at State Street Jr. High. He also taught at B. F. Stanton Jr. High before moving up to the Alliance High School. During his tenure at Alliance, Ray coached basketball, football, golf and was head baseball coach.
He ended his time at Alliance High School as chairman of the Science department where his first challenge was the transition effort from the old to the new high school.
Ray graduated from Youngstown State University in 1974 with a M.A. in Education, at which time he was hired as an assistant principal at Marlington High School. During his time in Marlington School district, Ray was also a principle at Lexington Elementary School. Overall, Ray was part of the education of Alliance area youth for over 31 years.
Ray was a member of the Union Avenue United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and served on various committees and the board of trustees; National Education Association; Alliance Historical Society, AARP and was a long time member of the Alliance Lions Club, where he was past president in 1976 and named Lion of the Year in 1970; and as a member of Melvin E. Jones Fellow in 2003 for his dedicated service to the Alliance community through the Lions work on vision care services; and former member of the Alliance Country Club.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years, Nancy (Polglaze) Asher of Sebring; daughter, Elizabeth Ann of Alliance; son, Donald (Cindy) and grandson Zachary of Torrance CA; brother, Gary (Brenda) of Van Buren, AK; along with his nieces, nephew, and great nieces and nephews.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Barbara Ann Mooney.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday December 15, 2010, at Union Avenue United Methodist Church, 1843 S. Union Avenue, Alliance, Ohio 44601 with Rev. Hoyte Wilhelm and Rev. Rebecca Innerst officiating. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at the funeral home.

Alliance Lions Club's Scholarship Fund, 22625 St Rt. 62, Alliance, Ohio 44601.
