Rev. David C. Hostetler, age 88, died October 3, 2013 at his home.
He was born in Berlin, Ohio, the son of Melvin W. and Eva (Lantz) Hostetler and lived his youth in Wayne County.
After graduation from Apple Creek High School, he enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine. During World War II he served 3½ years at sea in both the Atlantic and Pacific areas.
In December 1944, Rev. Hostetler and Mildred Warner were united in marriage. His wife of 68 years, Mildred, survives. They are the parents of Judy (Donald) Kingan of Alliance, Sue Hostetler of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Rebecca (Keith) Christner of Goshen, Indiana. They have five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
His parents; infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth; son-in-law, Keith Christner; and brothers, Wayde and Sterling, preceded him in death.
After World War II, David and Mildred established the Doylestown Super Market and were active in the Doylestown, Ohio community.
He was the founder and pastor of the Clinton United Methodist Church for 27 years. Rev. Hostetler completed the Methodist Church Course of Study and in 1967 was ordained Elder in the Clinton Methodist Church by Bishop Kearns. In addition, he served the Hopedale and Bethel Churches in Harrison County.
After retirement in 1991, Rev. Hostetler was pastor of visitation for Alliance Christ United Methodist Church for 14 years.
Rev. Hostetler was an active member of Lions Club, with more than fifty years perfect attendance, and of the Alliance Amateur Radio Club, the Alliance Senior Center and a volunteer at the Alliance Community Hospital.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, October 6, 2013 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, and at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday. A service for Lions Club members will be at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home prior to visitation.
Services will at 11 a.m. Monday, October 7, 2013 at Christ United Methodist Church in Alliance, Ohio, with his pastors, Rev. Stephanie Lee and Rev. Chris Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Apple Creek, Ohio, Village Cemetery.
