Richard Lee Greenwalt, age 87, passed away April 6, 2015, at Living Center South of the Finger Lakes Health Center in Geneva, New York.
Richard was born February 1, 1928, in East Liverpool, Ohio, and raised in Chester, West Virginia, the only child of Truman C. and Dora (Allison) Greenwalt.
Richard graduated with both a bachelor and master degree from West Virginia University with extensive graduate work from both Ohio State University and Kent State University and followed a career as a teacher for 33 years in the footsteps of his teacher mother. He is proud that his daughter, Nancy and grandson, James, also are/were in the "education business." Richard started his teaching career in New Waterford for three years, and then moved to Alliance where he taught at State Street Junior High/Middle School for 30 years before retiring. Many people will remember seeing him at the Mount Union field, taking tickets for the high school football games.
His fraternal affiliations were numerous. Many will remember seeing him in parades helping carry the large American flag with the Alliance Shrine Club. He was a charter member of the Flag Unit and Past President of the Shrine Club two different terms. He enjoyed his volunteer time helping to transport crippled children to the Shrine Hospital in Erie, Pa.
Richard was a 40-plus member of Conrad Masonic Lodge and served as Master twice (1977-78 and 1982-83). Prior to moving to New York, he was also a member of Council, Commandry and the Tadmore Shrine Temple of Akron. He was also Past Royal Patron of Grace Court Order of the Amaranth. He also had been Noble Grand of the Odd Fellows and served as Chair of the Alliance Memorial Day Committee for many years.
Many will remember Richard wearing his replica Civil War uniform. He participated honoring the memory of his grandfather, Peter R. Greenwalt, who served in Company I, 10th West Virginia Volunteers during the Civil War. Richard was a very active member of McClellan Camp No. 91 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He served in many local offices, was elected Ohio Department Commander and then was elected to serve the National Organization in 1978-79 as National Commander-in-Chief.
Richard was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served on session and was a Sunday school teacher for the Weaver Bible Class.
Richard was first married to Jane (Smith) Greenwalt Graham in June 1953. From this union came his two daughters, Nancy (J. Gregory) Hilton and Rebecca.
Richard married his current wife, Beatrice (Doane) Terry Greenwalt (of the home in Ovid, New York) in June 1980. He is further survived by his daughter, Nancy (J. Gregory) Hilton of Alliance, four grandsons, Jeffrey of Cleveland Heights, Tobias (Tiffany) of Hampton, Virginia, Phillip (Laura) of Alliance and James of Pittsburgh, and three great-granddaughters, He is further survived by step children; step grandchildren; step great-grandchildren and step great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents; daughter, Rebecca; and a grand-daughter-in-law.
Masonic Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with the Sons of Union Veterans services immediately following. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 13, 2015, at the funeral home. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday. Interment will be in Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester, West Virginia, in the family plot across from the Veteran Memorial where Richard's father, Truman Greenwalt, is interred. (a World War I veteran)
