Richard D. Sallyards, age 86 of Casselberry, Florida, and formerly of Alliance, died at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 31, 2004 at the Lutheran Haven Nursing Home in Oviedo, Florida.
He was born Sept. 25, 1917 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Scott and Mabel (Dunn) Sallyards. Mr. Sallyards attended the University of Missouri, and was a retired industrial engineer and worked for the Armour Company for 47 years as national distribution transportation manager.
A W.W.II U.S. Army Air Corp veteran, Mr. Sallyards earned a bronze star.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, volunteer at Alliance Community Hospital and Winter Park Hospital. He was a member of the University Club of Winter Park, Fla, B.P.O. Elks Orlando Lodge 1079, and championship contract bridge player in Florida.
He was a member of the Alliance Country Club, Boy Scouts of America, and a Democratic Committeeman in Stark County for ten years.
Survivors include his son Scott (Jalene) Sallyards of Casselberry, Fla., daughters Susan (Arthur) Zerby of Columbus, Ohio, Melinda Sallyards of Lima, Peru, Ann (Jason) Hagan of Alliance, and six grandchildren; Shaun, Melissa, Matthew, Rachel, Daniel and Drue.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie (DesJardins) Sallyards, whom he married May 22, 1948, and who died Dec. 3, 1993, and one sister Sara Langdon.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Rev. Connie Harris officiating. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
