Richard M. Spittler, age 79, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on June 21, 2008.
Richard was born in Cleveland on April 22, 1929, to the late Dr. Felix and Genevieve Basel Spittler. His brothers and sisters include Father Ernest, Thomas, Suzanne, Felix, Quentin, Carol, and Germaine (deceased). He was a graduate of St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, attended Georgetown University, and completed his degree at John Carroll University in 1951. From 1951 through 1954, Richard served in the Infantry Army as a 2nd Lieutenant during the Korean War.
After returning from the war, he was employed for over forty years by the Paul A. Kintz Construction Company, ultimately serving as Chief Executive Officer. Richard was an essential member of the Board of Directors of Atlantis Enterprises, Atlantis Country Club and the related Kintz business affiliates, originated by his father in law, Paul A. Kintz. He served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Alliance. In 1972, Richard was an integral member of a local investment group that founded Valley Forge, Inc., serving on the Board of Directors until it was sold in the late 1990's.
Richard was a dedicated parishioner of Regina Coeli Catholic Church. He was a member of Alliance Elks #467 and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid golfer, holding memberships in several clubs including: the Alliance Country Club, where he served on the Board of Directors and was a former president; the Congress Lake Golf Club and Congress Lake Investment Club; the Atlantis Golf Club; the Atlantis Country Club. Richard also enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, playing gin rummy, and was a wine enthusiast and gourmet chef.
Richard was a blessed and loving husband to Joan Kintz Spittler whom he married on September 27, 1952. United by the Catholic Church, Richard and Joan were married for 55 year and raised a beautiful family of six children. Their dear children and spouses include John & Karen Spittler, Ann & Randy Hunt, Christine & Jim Humboldt, Robert & Teresa Spittler, Mary Lynn & Mike Silvestro, and Philip & Maribeth Spittler. Richard was the perfect role model for his nineteen grandchildren who loved him dearly. Grandchildren include Jack, Katherine, and Peter Spittler; Christopher, Matthew, and Stephanie Hunt; Leslie, Amy, and Daniel Humboldt; Michael, Teresa, Patrick, Anna, and Matthew Spittler; Thomas and Joseph Silvestro; and Genevieve, Sara, and Stephen Spittler.
Arrangements for the celebration of Richard's life will be handled by Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with calling hours from 4-7 pm on Monday June 23rd at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. A Knights of Columbus Service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday. A Memorial Mass will be held at Regina Coeli Catholic Church on Tuesday June 24, 2008 at 11 am with Fr. Michael Seifert officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests, on Richard's behalf, that donations be made to Regina Coeli Catholic Church, 663 Fernwood Blvd. Alliance, Ohio 44061, or to the Alliance Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, 885 S. Sawburg Rd. Alliance, Ohio 44601, who assisted in end of life care.
