Rita Jean (Kandel) Oyster, age 86, of Alliance, passed away at 8:16 p.m., August 6, 2014, at Bel-Air Care Center.
She was born September 9, 1927, in Louisville, Ohio, to Oscar and Lettie (Seefong) Kandel and was a lifelong area resident.
Rita graduated from Louisville High School in 1945 and married LeRoy Glen Oyster on March 22, 1947. She was employed at Superior Sheet Steel in Louisville and as a cook for Marlington Schools for almost twenty years, starting as a cafeteria worker and later as the assistant Head Cook.
Rita loved spending time with her family which included five children, Fred LeRoy (Lola) Oyster, Nancy Ann (David) Waffler, Marilyn Kay (Jay) Morgan, Carolyn May (Paul) Gabric and Alice Louise (Michael) Kinnard; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She enjoyed family gatherings and loved helping people, friends and relatives. Her hobbies included sewing, camping and foot reflexology.
Rita was a member of the Beechwood United Methodist Church where she and LeRoy served as custodians for more than 25 years. She also served many years as a Sunday school teacher and was active in the Missionary Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, LeRoy Glenn Oyster, who died December 19, 1994: three sisters, Beulah Starkey, Twila Oyster and Dorothy Shearer; and two brothers, Merle and Dean Kandel.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, August 11, 2014, at Beechwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dave Chambers of Crossroads Hospice officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, August 10, 2014, at Cassaday Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Interment will be at Beechwood Cemetery.
