Robert Raymond Hunter Jr. died May 17, 2017 at McKinley Health Care Center in Canton, Ohio of Frontal Temporal Degeneration.
He was born in Canton on February 13, 1946, to Eileen Kienzle Hunter and Robert Hunter, Sr.
Hunter graduated from Alliance High School in 1964 and from the University of Cincinnati in 1969 receiving a B.S. in Civil Engineering with Honors. Between 1969 and 1972 Hunter worked as a civil engineer and transportation planner for the Ohio Department of Transportation. Hunter graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. in 1975. During his law school, he was an aide to Congressman Ralph Regula. He then worked for the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. until 1977 when he joined the law firm of Hunter, Hunter and Randall. The firm of Hunter & Hunter, which was started by Hunter's grandfather, F.E. Hunter, had its offices on Main Street in Alliance for 99 years. Bob was the assistant law director for Alliance for 16 years.
Hunter was a life member of Christ United Methodist Church and served on many committees. Recently he attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church to help with his stepson, Kyle Kocher.
Hunter was instrumental in starting Friends of the Parks. Friends of the Parks Inc. was created by Hunter on July 1, 1980 as a nonprofit organization. He sought grant application opportunities, helped garner donations and helped organize fundraisers.
When Hunter was active in Main Street affairs in 1991, he contacted Alpha Phi Alpha about purchasing the old City Savings Bank and Trust at 449 E. Main. Alpha Phi Alpha created affordable senior housing. Recently the historic landmark was awarded $27.8 million in Ohio Historic Preservation tax credits and was completely upgraded.
Hunter had been an active member of the Shade Tree Commission. The Shade Tree Commission planted a tree in Silver Park in Hunter's honor in 2015. He helped the Alliance Area Preservation Society to secure ownership of the Haines House and many of its antique furnishings in 2001. He was the pro bono attorney for Interfaith Day Care Center, which was incorporated by his father. He was also the pro bono attorney for the Red Cross, and the YWCA. He was a volunteer for Legal Aid in Stark County.
He was Volunteer of the Year for the United Way in 2002 and was given United Way's Gold Key Award in 2006. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Alliance City Schools in 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth Hunter, whom he married on March 28, 1981; son, Jeffery Hunter of Sunnyvale, CA and stepson, Kyle Kocher, of Hartville; a sister, Sue Commerson (Bob) of NC and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Pastor John Moffett (Judy).
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with The Rev. Timothy Muse officiating. Friends may call two hours prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eileen K. and Robert Hunter, Sr. memorial fund for the Stuckey Interfaith Daycare at the Greater Alliance Foundation 960 W. State St., Alliance, OH 44601.
