Robert T. McGirr, age 87, of Alliance, passed away at 1:54 p.m., Monday, March 31, 2014, at Sterling House of Alliance.
He was born December 11, 1926, in Alliance, Ohio, to Thomas L. and Opal (Battershell) McGirr.
Robert attended Lakeview High School in Chicago, Illinois.
He was employed in maintenance for TRW, and B.F. Goodrich before retiring from Gen Corp General Tire in Mogadore.
A member of the Greentown American Legion Post No. 436, Robert loved traveling, gardening, music and photography.
Robert served in the United States Navy during World War II, both in the Philippines and aboard the destroyer USS Cecil. On the Cecil, he was the helmsman and a gunner, serving on the vessel after the war, as it took part in nuclear weapons testing in the South Pacific.
Survivors include his daughter, Sharon (Alan) Andreani of Alliance; two granddaughters, Alicia (Shane) Edwards of Hartville and LeighAnn Andreani of Akron; and his dear companion, Shirley Cunningham of Alliance.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Barbara (Walker) McGirr, whom he married September 26, 1953 and who died August 2006.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Marlboro Cemetery Chapel with Pastor Joe Peters officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2014, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Marlboro Cemetery.
