Robert A. "Mac" McIlroy, age 77, of Alliance, passed away very suddenly, June 17, 2013, while riding his bike.
He was born April 10, 1936, in Wadsworth, Ohio, to James B. and Helen (Bannon) McIlroy.
Mac attended elementary school in Wadsworth, graduated from Alliance High School in 1954, and received a Chemical Engineering Degree from MIT in 1958 and a Master in Chemical Engineering from Akron University in 1969.
He joined Babcock and Wilcox Research in Alliance in 1958 with assignments in Barberton and North Canton during his 39 years of service. He received two patents in 1997 while working for Babcock and Wilcox Research and retired in 1998.
Robert was married to Joelle (Halverson) McIlroy, on July 15, 1962, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove, Iowa. Mac was a devoted husband, father and grandfather to his family. To this union was born one son, Andrew. The McIlroys were blessed to have Michael (Natalie) Howard, to join their family in 1982.
Robert was a member of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church in North Canton for 43 years, during which time he has served on the church council. Since his retirement in 1998, he has faithfully served on the church property committee, being chairman of that committee at the time of his death.
He loved bowling and riding his bike as well as cross country skiing.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Joelle; son, Andrew of Washington D.C. and Michael (Natalie) Howard of North Canton; grandchildren Katelynn, Joseph, Gracie and Emily, Howard, all of North Canton; brother, James (Seow) McIlroy; and nephew, Jonathan McIlroy, both of Los Angeles, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2013, at St. Jacob's Lutheran Church, 1460 State St. N.E. N. Canton, OH 44721 with Pastor Leah Schafer officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2013, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be at St. Jacobs Cemetery.
