Roosevelt Fortner Sr., age 97, of Alliance, passed away on July 16, 2022 at Aultman Alliance Hospital.
A resident of the Alliance area for most of his life, born July 21, 1924 in Toxey, Alabama to Fannie Mae Lloyd White and Marshall Fortner. He worked at American Steel Foundries from 1945-1986 until his retirement. He was the oldest living member in the American Steel 25 Year Club. Roosevelt was a member of Second Baptist Church. He loved hunting, fishing and barbecuing with his family and friends. He also loved his family, just sitting around drinking coffee and telling his stories of the 1930’s and 1940’s.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Evelyn Avery, Cheryl (Marion) Grimes, Ola Fortner, Candace (Victor) Seals; a son, Willie (Marley) Fortner; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years, Florean Fortner; five children, Sylvester Payton, Robert Payton, Bennie Fortner, Alvin Fortner and Nancy Stewart; three sisters, Alice Snow, Nancy Ford, Dorothy Mady; two brothers, Bennie Kirksey and Lawrence Fortner.
A funeral service will be held at Second Baptist Church on Saturday, July 23rd at 12:00 p.m. with a visitation one hour prior. Pastor Willie Bell will officiate. Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery.
