Russell L. Aufrance, age 80 of Alliance, died at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at McCrea Manor Nursing Center.
He was born Feb. 6, 1925 in Alliance, Ohio to John and Mary (Baldwin) Aufrance and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Aufrance graduated from Alliance High School and Bowling Green University. He worked at Morgan Engineering and then was employed by the F.B.I. for five years before returning to Alliance where he worked for Research Associates in Cleveland for 3 years. He then opened FACTS Inc., a private investigation firm, and later with Berk Barker, founded Checkpoint Guard Service.
He was a member of First Christian Church of Alliance, and a former church elder. He was a member of the Elks 467 and past member of the Board of Trustees, member of Conrad Lodge, Akron Crime Clinic, member of the former FBI Agents Association, and member of The Mighty 8th.
He was a past member of the Alliance Jaycees, and with his wife oversaw various aspects of Mt. Union Cemetery. He was known as the Rodman Library Chief Book packer and was a library book sale helper. Mr. Aufrance was also a volunteer for Alliance Visiting Nurse Hospice Association.
A 2nd Lieutenant with the U.S. Army Air Force, Mr. Aufrance received a Purple Heart, for flying B-17 Missions with the U.S. 8th Army Air Force in England during WWII.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Joan L. (Need) Aufrance, whom he married June 29, 1946; son, Thomas John (Mary Kay) Aufrance of Carson City, Nevada; daughter, Beth Aufrance (Randy) Bish of Columbus; granddaughters, Alexandra and Victoria; sister, Esther (Duane) Weaver of Alliance; sister-in-law, Mary Aufrance; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Todd Need Aufrance, who died as a young boy; and one brother, Rev. Robert Aufrance.
Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church with Pastor Pam Bruno officiating. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Interment will be at Mt. Union Cemetery.
