Ruth Evelyn Winner, age 89 of Alliance, passed away at her home at 6 p.m. Wednesday August 4, 2010 with her family at her side.
She was born October 7, 1920 in Jewett, Ohio to Elton S. and Rena B. (Miller) Lowmiller.
Ruth graduated valedictorian from Jewett High School and attended Canton Actual Business College.
She began her career working at the Harrison County Courthouse Extension Office in 1938, then moved to the Harrison and Stark County Farm Bureau and Co-op in 1942, where she worked until her marriage in 1950. Ruth was the Alliance City Treasurer from 1979 until 1985.
Ruth was a member of Christ United Methodist Church since 1950. She served as the treasurer for the United Methodist Women for five years. She also served on the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees.
She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary where she was a former Poppy Day Chairman, Treasurer, and President. She was a member and past treasurer of Quota Club, a member of the Alliance Woman's Club, the Alliance Area Republican Club where she was the membership chairman, a member and treasurer of P.E.O. Sisterhood, the treasurer of Alliance Historical Society of which she was a life member, a member of Friends of Rodman Library, and a member of Eastern Star Chapter 296 of Alliance. She was also a former member of Search Light Club, a former member of the Elks Auxiliary and Elks Widows Club, and formerly active with the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels.
Ruth was a recipient of the Athena Award in 2009. She was named Lions Citizen of the Year in 2002, Quotarian of the Year in 1997, and Republican of the Year in 1963.
Ruth enjoyed playing cards, especially 500 and Bridge, and reading historical books.
Survivors include children, Patricia A. (D. Stephen) Stone of Alliance, Ruth Eva (David) Williams of Alliance, Katie (John) Weitzel of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Charles E. (Cindy) Winner of Alliance; grandchildren, Erin M. Stone, Edward H. Williams, Thomas E. Williams, Jamie S. (Dan) Weitzel Scripps, Christie E. (Adam) Weitzel Merrill, Dennis Z. (Allie) Winner, Joshua C. Winner, and Hannah R. Winner; brother, Everett Lowmiller of Scio, Ohio; sister, Marjorie Whiteleather of Minerva, Ohio, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward C. Winner, whom she married January 4, 1950, and who died July 26, 1979; brothers, R. Edward Lowmiller and Leonard "Chip" Lowmiller; infant sister, Martha Jane, infant brother, Marion Jay, and an infant sister.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 9, 2010 at Christ United Methodist Church with the Reverend Doctor Karl Stonebraker officiating. Friends may call from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
