Shirley R. (Wyss) Wise Myers, age 86 of Alliance, went home to be with the Lord at 6:05 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2016, at her home surrounded by her six daughters and families and this is their story of her life.
She was born March 28, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to John E.A. (Wyss) Wise and Laverne (Drake) Wise.
Growing up during the Depression, Mom's childhood was not easy.
Due to unknown circumstances, Mom and her brother, John, were raised by their father.
Because her father changed jobs often, they moved around a lot. Eventually, they moved to Alliance, Ohio to put down roots.
She graduated from Alliance High School in 1948. During that time, Mom was swept off her feet by the love of her life, Eugene E. Myers, and they were married July 3, 1948.
Her life journey as a loving homemaker and Proverbs 31 woman began.
Mom and Dad raised 6 daughters together but also suffered the loss of their infant son, Robert, in 1956. Despite growing up without a mother figure in her life, Mom was the best mother any child could ask for. In addition, she was a mother figure to many of the Seneca Avenue / Cambridge Street neighborhood kids.
Her full time job as wife and mother kept her busy. Later in life, after her children moved on with their own lives, she began working at Christopher Columbus Pizza shop, retiring after 15 years.
She endured the passing of her husband in 1999 after almost 51 years of marriage.
She was a member of Alliance First Assembly of God Church. She had a generous heart and supported many of the church's activities, including Vacation Bible School, Women's Ministry and various missions programs.
Among her many talents, an artist, seamstress, gardener, cook and costume maker, Mom was also well known for her elaborate Halloween costumes and for making her children's clothing over the years. Mom also never met a stuffed bear she couldn't resist adding to her collection. Always wanting her family close, Mom would host regular Sunday dinners at our 605 S. Seneca Ave. home.
As we all gathered to make preparations for the celebration of her life, she gave us her last words of wisdom in a note left inside a box of old photos for us to find, which read, "Don't cry for me, put a smile on your face. You know that I'm happy in this wonderful place. Don't cry for me, with God in your life no worry, no strife. When one day you'll see just beyond that white cloud it's me. -Mom"
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Eugene E Myers, infant son, Robert E. Myers and brother, John B. Wise
She is survived by her daughters, Nancy (Joe) Ratliff of Berlin Center, OH, Judy Evans of Alliance, Janice (Dwight) Croley of Alliance, Susan (Joseph) Mastroianni of Alliance, Lisa Myers of Alliance, and Mary Guillermo of Morgantown, WV; grandchildren, Gerald Edinger, Amanda Evans, Damaceno Guillermo II, Roberto Guillermo, Antonio Guillermo, and Sarah Croley; Great-Grandchild, Terry Edinger and niece and nephew, Deborah Salyers and Donald Wise.
