Susan Nielsen

March 26, 1943 — May 24, 2023

Susan (Akin) Nielsen, age 80, passed away unexpectedly, May 24, 2023 after a sudden illness.

She was born in New London, Wisconsin on March 26, 1943 to George and Esther (Krenz) Akin. After graduating from Hortonville High School in 1961, she graduated from Marquette University’s Dental Hygiene program.

While at Marquette she married John Nielsen to whom she was married to for over 60 years. They moved to Tampa, Florida and she practiced dental hygiene while John attended the University of South Florida.

She and John moved to Alliance, Ohio in 1967 after John received his degree and began work at Babcock & Wilcox Research Center. Although she practiced dental hygiene at several dental offices in Alliance, her main focus was being mom to her three children. Her greatest honor was being called mom and grandma.

Susan grew up as the daughter of a very successful high school coach so she was a sports fan who enjoyed following the Browns and the Buckeyes, however, she enjoyed viewing and supporting her children’s and grandchildren’s athletic activities more. She also enjoyed golfing and bowling as well as playing bridge with friends.

Susan enjoyed nature. The day she became ill she had been gardening in the woods and golfing.

Susan was a longtime member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, where for many years she worked with friends and made quilts that were sent to those in need in under developed countries.

In recent years she and John were able to travel and spend time with their children and grandchildren.  Susan will be remembered by all who knew her as a kind, humble friend.

Susan is survived by husband, John; son, Steven (Toni) Nielsen; daughters, Christine (Chris) Nathe and Anne (Matt) Brown; grandchildren, Rhen Nathe, Marissa (Austin) Andreasen, Chad Nathe, Faith Brown; sister, Carolyn (Akin) Kubitz; sisters-in-law Kenlynn Akin, Loretta Hacker, Mary Jane Yates and Gloria Kormanick; and brother-in-law, Jim Nielsen.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; brothers, George Akin, Ronald Akin; sisters-in-law, Linda Rusch and Lorna Nielsen; and brothers-in-law, Charles Kubitz, Harley Nielsen and Wesley Nielsen.

A visitation will be held at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church on June 10th at 10:00 A.M. prior to a graveside service at Marlboro Cemetery. Deacon Patricia E.W. Jabre will officiate.  A luncheon will follow at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, family and friends are welcome.
