Thelma Nadine (Harris) Bluhm, age 83 of Alliance, died at 7:45 a.m. Thursday April 7, 2005 at Canterbury Villa.
She was born January 4, 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri to L.E. and Myrtle (Mills) Harris and lived in Alliance since 1967.
Mrs. Bluhm graduated in 1938 from Altoona High School in Altoona, Kansas and in 1940; she graduated from Chanute Jr. College in Chanute, Kansas. She did secretarial and drafting work for several local companies and retired from Nichols Field Services and the Dresser Company in 1992.
She also received flight training in 1943, and served with the W.A.S.P. as a Women's Air Force Service Pilot from 1943 to 1944.
She was discharged on Dec. 20, 1944 after serving with the Army Air Corps (Air Force). Mrs. Bluhm was a WASP civilian pilot, flying planes from factories to military bases. The WASPS were granted military status after Vietnam. She followed her love for flying years later by being one of the founders of MAPS (Military Aviation Preservation Society).
Survivors include her children, Neal Bluhm of Cornish Flat, New Hampshire, Noel Bluhm of Alliance, Ohio Curtis (Karen) Bluhm of North Benton, Ohio Nancy (Milton) Hubbs Shapiro of Paris, Ohio, Karl Bluhm of North Benton, Ohio, Nelson Bluhm of Minerva, Ohio, Clayton (Cheryl) Bluhm of Alliance, Ohio, and Henry Bluhm of Alliance, Ohio; one sister, Evelyn (Frank) Mastrostefano of Florida, one brother, Kenneth (Elsie) Harris of Florida and ten grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Norman Bluhm, who died in 1988, and one sister, Elaine Koch.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Chaplain Norm Brunelle officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway, N. Canton, Ohio 44720.
