Thelma Lucille (Pauli) Saunier, 93, passed into eternity Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Alliance Community Hospital at 10:09 a.m. due to complications from a fall.
Other than her time in World War II Thelma lived her entire life in the Alliance area. Her last residence was with her sister-in-law, Helen Pauli on the same farm on which Thelma was raised.
Thelma was born to Jacob and Erma (Oswalt) Pauli, Dec. 20, 1920. She attended Union Grove School, graduated from Alliance High School, and trained as a registered nurse in the class of 1941 at Alliance City Hospital.
From 1944 to 1946, she served as a Second Lieutenant in Patton's 3rd Army Nurses Corp in the European Theater. While serving, she helped close down medical hospitals, flew in a B-17, and attended a day at the Nuremberg Trials during the time Hermann Goering and Rudolph Hess were on trial.
She married Richard "Steve" Saunier, Aug. 17, 1946, and over the years worked as a surgical nurse at Alliance City Hospital and as a registered nurse at both, Transue and Williams and Dr. William McCrea's office, as well as working private duty. She was a member of Science Hill Community Church and Sugarcreek Valley Chapter of The Archaeological Society of Ohio.
Thelma's greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was an avid gardener and bird watcher. She also loved to swim and both she and her husband had been lifeguards at the former Stanley Pool in Alliance. While in the Army she enjoyed clubbing and dancing and playing tennis.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter, Whitney Saunier; a brother, Ivan "Pete" Pauli; sisters, Helen Hazen and Phyllis Price; and two nephews.
